  • In Canada, a child is diagnosed with a critical illness every two hours. For 40 years, Make-A-Wish Canada has given sick children and their families the strength they need to face critical illness by granting them a wish.
  • Wishes Are Medicine. Research shows that a prescribed wish can improve adherence to treatment, reduce emergency room visits, and deliver lasting health benefits. Wishes are a powerful part of a child’s treatment journey, bringing strength, hope, and resilience when it’s needed most.
  • Last year, 12 life-changing wishes were granted in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, and there are currently 300 local children eagerly waiting for theirs to come true. We still have thousands of wishes waiting to be granted. Wishes for local children like Spencer.
  • Spencer is a lovable, funny, and clever four-year-old with a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin. At just 13 months old, Spencer was diagnosed with leukemia. What began as vague signs of illness quickly escalated, and he was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. “The moment he was diagnosed was shocking and devastating,” said his mom, Jacqueline. He began chemotherapy the very next year and endured two and a half years of treatment. Now, one year after completing treatment, Spencer is in remission, thriving and excited to start kindergarten.
  • Wishes play a critical role in a child’s medical journey and when prescribed alongside medical care, they improve health outcomes. Patients who received wishes reduced their likelihood of using the emergency room by half.
